Moreover, the yellow wallpaper represents the narrator’s spoiled happiness because the color yellow symbolizes happiness but in the story, the color of the yellow wallpaper is “old, foul, bad” and has a “peculiar odor”.ģ.In her short story, "The Yellow Wallpaper", Charlotte Perkins Gilman depicts feminism to epitomize the entrapment of woman from society, specifically man. In the beginning, the narrator is constantly “tired” and “nervous” and wishes that “John would take me away from here!” However, as she spends more time in the room, the narrator shows signs of schizophrenia and is determined to free "the woman" behind the yellow wallpaper which is why she no longer “want to go out” of the room.Ģ.The symbolism of the yellow wallpaper is area of restriction built by man and society which woman can never escape.
